Frequently asked questions
I have a bank of 3 x 110Ah heavy duty batteries.
1 x engine
2 x house for the electric gear including the Northlift, the 2 house wired in parallel. A big alternator on the Yanmar 4LV engine.
I always leave the engine running in tick-over when using the electric equipment. When the electric motor sounds under stress, I pause operations or maneuver to reduce the load.
Unless you have dual controls outside, I start uptide and haul the gear drifting downtide towards it. This does depend on the strength of tide - slacker tides are obviously better and easier to haul, especially with a small boat and electric eq. rather than hydraulic.
For turbot, I use:
Rod : 8-12lb class, 8ft
Reel : Penn squall or fathom 2, no level wind
Line : 25lb braid backing with a 30ft x 50lb mono leader
Terminal : weight dependent on tide but generally 6-10oz
Hooks: standard or circle 4/0
Trace line: fluorocarbon 30lb x 6-8ft
For longlining:
Reel : electramate Tuna brute III
Line : 250lb mono, 2-3mm, length of each line approx. 400m
Snaps : 60 x 18mm
Trace : 100lb x 1-2ft
Hooks : standard or circle 4/0 stainless
